Restart Windows Services From Your Linux PC

If you’ve ever wanted to remotely restart a service on your Windows PC from your Linux machine, the Command-Line Fu website has you covered with the quick and easy command to use.

In order to actually use this command, you’ll need to make sure that you have the samba-common package installed for Ubuntu or the corresponding package for your Linux distribution. The simple sudo apt-get install samba-common command will do it for any Debian-based Linux.

Now you can list the services available on a Windows machine by using the following command, making sure to use credentials that have administrative privileges on the remote machine:

net rpc service list -I IPADDRESS -U USERNAME%PASSWORD

Once you’ve identified the service name that you want to restart, you can issue separate stop and start commands. To stop the service:

net rpc service stop SERVICENAME -I IPADDRESS -U USERNAME%PASSWORD

Then you can start the service again with the following command:

net rpc service start SERVICENAME -I IPADDRESS -U USERNAME%PASSWORD

Readers should note that a number of factors may influence whether this technique actually works — if the machine has a desktop firewall installed or the file sharing services are disabled it probably won’t work, but it’s still a very helpful technique that might come in handy.

How Data Travels From A Wireless Device

How does that picture you just sent your buddy get from your phone to his computer, exactly? Surprisingly enough, not through pixie dust and unicorn dreams! Here’s how it really works.

iMovie runs on the iPhone 3GS if you jailbreak it

So we know that IOS4 will be coming to older phones, but of course certain features like iMovie are planned for just the iPhone 4, and not previous models. Well, it turns out that you can run iMovie on older phones, they just have to be jailbroken. I’m not going to go into the technical details, you can get those from the video – so enjoy!

Tamatebako: Fujitsu’s self-destruct USB memory finally goes on sale (in Japan)

Do you remember the cool “self-destructing” USB drive Fujitsu teased back in April last year? The device, which offers timed data deletion to prevent unauthorized access, was shown on both Fujitsu Japan’s and Fujitsu America’s website, and today the company in Tokyo finally [JP, PDF] named, spec’d and dated it for end consumers.

The USB drive will be called Tamatebako (in Japan, at least) and can destruct stored data automatically within a given time frame (users can choose any time limits from 10 minutes to one full week). Other security promises include that data can be set to be erased when the drive’s being accessed with the wrong passwords (adjustable), when it’s plugged into a non-authorized computer or that it’s impossible for evil-doers to copy data from the drive.

The Tamatebako also keeps a record of which PC or Mac it has been plugged into. Data is encrypted via AES256bit. It comes with 2GB of memory (1.86GB are actually usable) and weighs 45g.

The USB drive will hit Japanese stores as early as the beginning of next month with an open price model. No word yet on a US release, but I guess it’s not completely out of the question.

Finally, A Menstruation Machine That Allows Men To Experience The Monthly Cycle!

Here’s one gadget I won’t be lining up for: a “Menstruation Machine” that allows men “to experience the painful bleeding of menstruation”. Well, wow.

The device is the graduate project of Royal College of Art student Hiromi Ozaki. It’s pretty horrifying!

Fitted with a blood dispensing mechanism and lower-abdomen-stimulating electrodes, the Menstruation Machine simulates the pain and bleeding of an average 5 day menstruation process of a human.

And just in case you couldn’t picture it in your mind, there’s this:

You’re welcome!

You Are Being Monitored

You know that feeling that someone’s over or behind you, watching your every move? Well here’s some bad news: it’s a whole lot worse than you thought.

The sign was spotted in the Museum Quarter of Vienna, Austria. Which, really, I’m assuming if you don’t speak English that image is triply weird and hilarious.
